Mass. firm buys Lydall’s paper unit

Manchester manufacturer Lydall Inc. said Friday it sold its business making paper liners for electric transformers to Weidmann Electrical Technology Inc. in Framingham, Mass.

Weidmann also licensed some related technology from Lydall as part of the deal whose terms were not disclosed.

Lydall CEO Dale Barnhart said the sale is part of Lydall’s strategy to eventually divest long-time commodity businesses like electrical paper and deeper into its high-value markets, such as biomedical containers. Lydall makes automotive filters, and sound and thermal insulation,

With money from sale, Lydall says it will upgrade its Green Island, N.Y., plant, where it will continue to producing electrical paper under contract for up to two years, before converting over to produce higher value products.
