Marlborough drug importer faces jail time

A Marlborough medical-products distributor faces a year in prison and a $1,000 fine after a conviction of distributing mislabeled prescription drugs, federal prosecutors say.

Wesley Skorski, 41, pleaded guilty Tuesday before U.S. Magistrate Judge Donna F. Martinez in Hartford to one count of introducing a misbranded drug into interstate commerce, a breach of the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act, the Connecticut U.S. Attorney’s office said.

According to investigators, Skorkski owned and ran AviaMed, based in Wethersfield and licensed to distribute wholesale medical devices and prescription drugs under the act. As part of AviaMed’s business model, Skorski received orders for prescription drugs from physicians and other health care providers.

In 2010 and 2011, prosecutors said, Skorski signed pacts with suppliers in the United Kingdom and Canada to receive prescription drugs, including oncology and dermatology drugs, which were commercially manufactured or produced outside the U.S. for distribution in foreign markets.

After receiving the drugs from foreign suppliers, Skorski repackaged them and distributed them to health care providers in the U.S. outside Connecticut.

The drugs Skorski received from foreign suppliers failed to contain the labeling required by the Food and Drug Administration, and were not approved for sale within the U.S.

Skorski’s sentencing is set for Dec. 16.
