What do you do? I work as Physiatrist (otherwise known as a Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Physician) in Bristol. This specialty is concerned with the diagnosis, evaluation and management of both physical and cognitive impairment and disabilities. My interests in this practice are the diagnosis and treatment of patients with painful or functionally limiting conditions and impairments of the musculoskeletal systems. This includes both occupational and sports-related aspects.

What do you want to be doing in 10 years? Ten years from now healthcare in this country will be very different and I hope to be on the forefront of making positive constructive improvements that will benefit the practice of medicine and the people we are privileged to treat. I want to be healthy enough to continue to enjoy time with my family and friends and stay a positive influence in the community.

What is your biggest strength? To listen carefully and completely to all the information available before making a decision on how to best improve a situation and allow myself the best opportunity for success. I think this strength is imperative in understanding how critical effective communication leads to success.

Where do you go for new ideas? Mentors and colleges have always been a reliable source of ideas. Experience is the most effective way to form new ideas. Most of what I consider new ideas is information learned through daily conversations, review of research, medical journals, experience and interaction with people. The difficulty is recalling it at a time when you want to. Finding a way to relax through music and the arts has helped make these new learned ideas easier to recall and develop.

What is the best advice you received? Don’t take yourself too seriously, learn to laugh at yourself. It is easy to lose perspective on what is really important in life, but keeping your sense of humor during times of stress will keep you grounded.

What service or charitable cause has your attention? Two programs started and funded through the Hospital for Special Care in New Britain — Manes & Motion and the Ivan Lendl Wheelchair Sports Camp. Manes & Motion is an organization which improves the well being of children and adults living with physical, cognitive and/or emotional disabilities through horse riding activities. The Ivan Lendl Wheelchair Sport Camp is a free camp for children and adolescents living with physical disabilities which teaches instruction in several different sports including tennis, swimming, basketball and track and field from world class disabled athletes and tennis professional Ivan Lendl.
