On May 26, 2009, Gov. Jodi Rell signed into law Public Act 09-20, An Act Requiring the Administration of a Screening Test for Cystic Fibrosis to Newborn Infants. The law marked the culmination of a strategic collaboration between the March of Dimes Connecticut Chapter, the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation and many volunteers, parents and other partners. These partners worked tirelessly to realize their goal of mandated screening of newborns for cystic fibrosis, a condition that that affects the lungs and digestive system.
Screening began on Oct.1 and includes screening for all 29 treatable metabolic and functional disorders as recommended by the American College of Medical Genetics and the March of Dimes.
