Manufacturer’s closure plans to impact 290 workers

Aptar Group Inc. formally notified the state this week that its plans to close its Stratford and Torrington plants will mean the elimination of 290 positions.

The company, which is headquartered in Crystal Lake, Ill., employs some 14,000 workers around the world. Aptar designs and manufactures drug delivery, consumer product dispensing and packaging products for the pharmaceutical, beauty, personal care, home, food and beverage industries.

Amy Flood, director of human resources for the company, notified the state Department of Labor of the decision in two separate Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act (WARN) notices on Wednesday.

The company had previously announced the planned closures, which are being prompted by the company’s decision to consolidate certain manufacturing operations to other facilities in Illinois, New Jersey, and Mexico.

In Stratford, the company plans to permanently close its facility at 125 Access Road. The move will impact 231 employees at the Stratford plant, which will close March 31, 2021. Terminations are expected to begin in late September and conclude by next March.

The company’s plant at 301 Ella Grasso Ave. in Torrington is expected to close Dec. 31, 2020.

At this location, 59 employees will lose their jobs, with the layoffs to happen between Sept. 15 and the end of the year.

Employees were first advised of the planned plant closures back in February, according to the notices. The impacted employees have a range of titles, such as engineer, mechanic, technician, auditor and supply analyst.
