Mansfield gets $610K HUD grant

The University of Connecticut’s hometown has obtained a $610,000 federal housing grant to promote affordable housing and economic development programs that create jobs, authorities say.

Mansfield got the grant from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), town officials and Congressman Joe Courtney announced Monday.

Town Manager Matthew Hart said the grant will be used to create Manfield’s action plan for sustainable development and green building action plan, legs of its housing and economic development strategy.

Through its strategy, the town hopes to expand community participation, increase the number of housing units affordable to the general workforce, facilitate job creation, and preserve agricultural land while allowing farmers to recognize value from land holdings.

It also would ensure that zoning regulations support housing choice and business growth by identifying and removing regulatory barriers in the development process.
