Mandatory sick leave goes into effect Sunday

Connecticut officially on Sunday will become the first state in the nation to mandate paid sick leave to certain employees.

On New Year’s Day, a number of business-related laws passed in the 2011 Connecticut General Assembly session will become effective, according to the Connecticut Business & Industry Association.

Mandatory paid sick leave affects only certain employers with 50 or more employees, mostly in the service industry. The requirement calls for the employer to provide one hour of paid sick leave for every 40 hours an employee works.

Other laws effective Sunday include the business entity tax, a $250 state payment that is now due only every other year; the consolidation of job expansion credits into a new one that can be applied against the insurance premium, corporation business, utility company or personal income tax; and new health insurance mandates for employers; and the expansion of the Manufacturers’ Investment Account, allowing smaller manufacturers to pool their money into an investment fund to save for equipment purchases and job expansion.
