Malloy’s latest plan eliminates 6,560 state positions

Gov. Dannel P. Malloy’s office has released a summary of the budget-balancing plan that he’s submitting to the General Assembly on Friday, The Associated Press reports.

It includes a list of agency-by-agency reductions and the total number of job reductions, 6,560. That figure, according to the summary, includes layoffs, retirements and the elimination of vacant positions.

Malloy is trying to balance the two-year, $40.1 billion budget after unionized workers failed to ratify a labor savings agreement that was supposed to save $1.6 billion.

Malloy and Lt. Gov. Nancy Wyman said they did not want to go down this road and lay off state employees. But “with no clear path” to reach a ratified deal with union leadership, they said they have no other choice but to fill the budget hole.
