Malloy wants to combine DEP, DPUC

Gov. Dannel P. Malloy unveiled a proposal Tuesday to combine environmental and utility regulators into a single agency.

The new Department of Energy and Environmental Protection would include the Department of Public Utility Control and the Department of Environmental Protection to allow for a more effective coordination of state energy and environmental policies, Malloy said.

The proposal would likely require legislative review and approval.

“Merging these two functions under one leader will allow the state to act cohesively in two vitally important and directly related policy areas, particularly in terms of economic development, siting, permitting and other issues,” he said.

Malloy campaigned on a pledge to find ways to streamline state government to improve service and save money.
