Malloy touts energy advances in State of the State

In his State of the State address on Wednesday afternoon, Gov. Dannel Malloy touted Connecticut’s advancements in energy policy since he took office in 2011.

The highlights of his speech included the 12 percent drop in electric rates since he took office, which are the result of fewer state fees assessed against ratepayers and lower natural gas prices. He touted the creation of the Department of Energy & Environmental Protection as Connecticut becoming the first state in the nation to join energy, environmental, and economic interests into one agency.

Malloy said Connecticut businesses and residents will see continued savings as the components of his comprehensive energy strategy are realized, such as switching the majority of the state to natural gas home heating and expanding energy efficiency programs.

The governor also mentioned the advances the state and the utilities have made since Tropical Storm Irene and the October Nor’easter both knocked out power to nearly 1 million businesses and residents in 2011. Malloy said these advances help lessen the impact of Superstorm Sandy when it hit in late 2012.
