Gov. Dannel P. Malloy, who will be sworn in for his second term this afternoon, signaled he would support legislation ensuring that revenue for transportation is not diverted for other purposes.
Facing a $1.3 billion deficit in the next state budget, Malloy has said he is open to the idea of building tolls on some of the state’s highways, but he said Tuesday that he would only support such a measure with a lock box provision.
“Until that legislation is passed and signed, I will veto any attempt to levy additional sources of new revenue for transportation,” Malloy said in a statement.
Though a lock box may sound appealing to voters, legislators in other states that have tried something similar have been able to divert some transportation revenue regardless, the Connecticut Mirror reported this week.
