Malloy to announce decision on I-84 busway

Gov. Dannel P. Malloy says he will announce his decision regarding a proposed $567 million bus route between New Britain and Hartford, The Associated Press reports.

Malloy said he has met with supporters and opponents of the proposed 9.4-mile bus corridor along unused railroad tracks and will announce his decision at a news conference Monday.

Connecticut’s share would be $110 million. As much as $15 million has already been spent for design and acquiring property.

Federal officials say it’s an affordable way to quickly transport commuters along the often congested Interstate 84. But Michael Nicastro, president of the Central Connecticut Chambers of Commerce in Bristol, says the project is ineffective and too costly.

The busway was proposed in 1998 with a price tag of $75.3 million. Acquiring rights-of-way and other factors have driven up costs.
