Malloy talking energy with N. England, Canada leaders

Gov. Dannel P. Malloy spnt the majority of his time on Monday in Canada meeting with the premiers of that country’s eastern provinces as well as the New England governors to discuss the region’s energy future.

Malloy is co-chair of this 39th annual Conference of New England Governors and Eastern Canadian Premiers, an organization of which he is also chairman. The goal of the organization is to foster friendly relationships and join together to discuss issues impacting the whole region. This year’s event was in St. Johns, Newfoundland and Labrador in Canada.

The subject of this year’s conference was energy innovations that can slow climate change, as well as general energy issues that impact the U.S. and Canada.

One of the main energy issues between the two countries is the large amount of hydro and wind electricity generated in Canada that could be imported to lower New England’s dependence on fossil fuels, particularly natural gas. Hartford utility parent Eversource Energy has proposed a transmission line through New Hampshire to tap into those Canadian resources.
