Malloy signs budget cuts

The state budget mitigation plan became official Monday when Gov. Dannel P. Malloy signed the measure during a formal ceremony in Hartford.

The plan, passed during the legislative special session last week, makes $252.3 million in budget cuts. Malloy earlier had made more the $110 million in recissions – withdrawing authority to spend money under his administrative authority. Together, the two programs close the $365 million deficit as required by law. But the cuts do not address an additional $50 million deficit that would exist if State Comptroller Kevin Lembo’s projection of a $415 million deficit proves accurate.

When the legislature returns in January, it will face new budget challenges in shaping a plan for the next two years.
