Malloy orders state sexual harassment compliance review

Gov. Dannel P. Malloy has called for a comprehensive review of state sexual harassment prevention policies in the wake of an “unprecedented” number of workplace issues across the country.

Malloy said Tuesday Connecticut’s state agencies must work actively to prevent sexual harassment in the workplace. He has signed an executive order directing a review of state policies and procedures within all executive branches of state government.

“Recently, our country has seen an unprecedented number of brave individuals come forward with shocking reports of sexual harassment in the workplace, creating a heightened awareness about the prevalence of predatory harassment and the role of power differentials in the workplace,” Malloy said.

The state instituted mandatory sexual harassment prevention training for employers in 1991.

As an employer, the state of Connecticut must foster a “civil environment and tolerant culture that embraces diversity and respect among its employees,” he said.

The state Department of Administrative Services (DAS) will conduct the review, determining which agencies are in compliance, how that compliance is achieved and whether training can be improved.

A report due Feb. 1 will be shared with legislative and judicial leaders, Malloy said.
