Malloy: CT is “range confident”

More than 90 percent of Connecticut residents are within 20 miles of an electric-vehicle charging station, Gov. Dannel P. Malloy announced.

Malloy said that makes Connecticut a “range-confident” state. Range confidence is a commonly used term in the electric vehicle industry that speaks to consumer reluctance — beyond the higher purchase price of the vehicles — to buy an electric vehicle. If the network of charging stations is sparse in an area, drivers could get stranded.

Connecticut will soon have more than 187 charging stations available to the public, officials said.

The state has spent more than $216,000 to install 68 of those stations in 44 cities and towns. The money comes from the settlement that allowed Northeast Utilities and NStar to merge. The state has also installed some chargers along highway corridors that can charge a vehicle in about 30 minutes.
