MakerspaceCT to stage robot battle tournament in Hartford

Taking a page from television shows such as “BattleBots,” technology incubator MakerspaceCT is bringing a robot combat tournament to downtown Hartford this fall.

The event, dubbed “Maker Battle 2021” and scheduled for Oct. 2, will pit home-made, remote-controlled robots against each other in three five-minute rounds, or until one of the machines is disabled, MakerspaceCT officials said. The nonprofit plans to stream the competition live.

Registration and tickets are now available through the MakerspaceCT website.

Devra Sisitsky, executive director of MakerspaceCT, said the tournament is intended in part to highlight the growing importance of robotics in numerous fields.

“Robotics is essential to a rapidly growing array of industries, and increasingly indispensable in our daily lives,” Sisitsky said. “Robots spark creativity and innovation that connect people with the passion for these cutting edge machines, and the dynamic technology is what careers are made of.”

MakerspaceCT is based in the historic G. Fox building in downtown Hartford. It features close to 30,000 square feet of workshops, including machines and tools used for CNC machining, metal fabrication, 3D printing, laser engraving and other fabrication processes.
