Majority of CBIA financially-backed candidates win

The Connecticut Business & Industry Association Wednesday morning officially congratulated newly elected leaders and vowed to work closely with them to “make a great state even better.”

CBIA President & CEO Joe Brennan released a lengthy statement Wednesday but did not allude to the wins and losses, which are still the subject of unofficial vote tallies, from among the 102 legislative candidates his organization endorsed and backed earlier this election season. Those candidates crossed party lines, but were largely Republicans.

However, according to a CBIA spokesperson, 11 of the 14 candidates the business group supported through independent expenditures were elected.

“On behalf of our thousands of member companies all across the state of Connecticut, we congratulate the winners in yesterday’s legislative elections, and thank all those who ran for office,” Brennan stated, calling for unity.

“Now that the voters have spoken, it is vitally important that policymakers work in a truly bipartisan manner to address voters’ top concerns – the economy, job creation and the affordability of our state. Connecticut has tremendous economic assets and we are beginning to see heightened focus on the state’s challenges.”

Collaboration will yield solutions to the state’s fiscal woes, “restore confidence in Connecticut as a great place to do business, and make our state a leader in economic growth and job creation,” he said.

Overall, the CBIA endorsed 18 GOP candidates for the state Senate compared to four Democrats. In House races, CBIA endorsed 61 Republicans vs. 19 Democrats.

Earlier in the year, CBIA disclosed plans to spend more than $400,000 to endorse General Assembly candidates that supported pro-growth economic policies.
