Hartford health insurer Aetna Inc. poached a senior officer from Avon’s Magellan Health Services to lead Aetna’s specialty products unit.
Aetna announced Thursday that Magellan Health President Karen S. Rohan is joining as executive vice president and head of specialty products. Rohan will be responsible for Aetna’s dental and vision, group insurance and consumer financial solutions businesses.
She also will lead the health giant’s distribution strategy. Rohan will report to Mark T. Bertolini, Aetna’s chairman and CEO and will serve on the company’s executive committee.
Rohan has been Magellan president since 2009, responsible for the strategic direction and profit and loss of Magellan’s behavioral health, radiology, specialty pharmaceuticals and Medicaid pharmacy benefits administration business units.
Prior to Magellan, Rohan was president of the group disability, dental and vision care businesses of Cigna Corp., where she spent 18 years.
In a separate statement Thursday, Rene Lerer, M.D., Magellan chairman and CEO, hailed Rohan for her service to the company. Meantime, Lerer says he will assume day-to-day management of the business.
Lerer did not say if Rohan’s job will be filled. Attempts to immediately reach Magellan were unsuccessful.
