A contractor who builds luxury homes has paid $3.5 million for the former headquarters of the Connecticut Humane Society, a Westport animal rescue agency that closed in mid-July and moved to Wilton, according to property records.
Joseph Feinleib, founder of Westport-based Coastal Luxury Homes, bought the 7,195-square-foot building from the agency, which announced the closure and move to Wilton on its website, on July 25. The Connecticut Humane Society has owned the 1-acre property, which also has a 1,096-square-foot outbuilding, since 1944. Both structures were built in 1952, property records show.
The property is appraised at $643,400 and assessed at $430,400.
“I’m going to convert it into between 25 to 30 rental units,” Feinleib told the Hartford Business Journal. “It’s a great improvement of that property for the town.”
He said he plans to present a proposal, which may include a “small amount” of retail space, to the Planning and Zoning Commission in four months. The units would be high-end apartments, he said.
Coastal Luxury Homes’ developments include Coastal Point West, a 12-unit apartment complex at 4 Morningside Drive N., in Westport.
