Lincoln Financial Foundation recently awarded grants to 15 local nonprofits that feed and shelter the homeless and abused, and provide other social services.
Foodshare received $40,000 to support its efforts to fight hunger and improve nutrition in Hartford. Foodshare works year-round to increase the self-sufficiency of those in need, increase the community’s involvement in addressing hunger, and improve food assistance in the city.
The Lincoln Foundation also awarded $30,000 to the Easter Seals Greater Hartford Rehabilitation Center for breast cancer rehabilitation and services. The grant will support an array of innovative programs to treat the side effects of breast cancer treatment and rebuild the lives of survivors. The program includes comprehensive medical rehabilitation as well as breast cancer survival planning for patients and their families.
The support for Foodshare and Easter Seals was among more than $225,000 in human services grants by Lincoln Financial Foundation.
The Make-A-Wish Foundation of Connecticut announced that the Beneski family of Avon will be honored at the upcoming annual “Evening of Wishes Gala” April 24 from 6 p.m. to midnight at the MGM Grand at Foxwoods. The Beneski story is a special real-life example of the Make-A-Wish spirit in action. Eamon, Seamus and Jake (three of the Beneski’s four sons) share a rare genetic condition that qualified them to have their wishes granted.
For the eighth year in a row, the Avon Foundation Breast Care Fund has awarded a $25,000 one-year grant to Hartford Hospital to increase awareness of the life-saving benefits of early detection. Damaris L. Perez, from The Connecticut Breast and Cervical Cancer Early Detection Program at the hospital, will educate Greater Hartford women and refer them to low-cost or free mammograms and clinical breast exams in their communities.
The Alliance for Consumer Education announced that they have entered into a partnership with four Eastern League baseball teams in a program to educate parents, school officials and individuals in the community about the dangers of inhalant abuse. The latest national data reveals more 12-year olds are using inhalants than cigarettes, marijuana, hallucinogens, cocaine, and nonmedical use of prescription drugs Each team will host an Inhalant Abuse Awareness Game this season to include free promotional giveaway items, and educational components. The New Britain Rock Cats will host their event on July 22 at the 7:05 p.m. home game.
