Nonprofit Lighthouse for Humanity paid $415,000 for a foreclosed 15,015-square-foot building at 11 Mountain Ave. in Bloomfield for its Muslim religious and community center.
According to 10-year-old Lighthouse’s homepage, its purpose is promoting spiritual guidance through teachings, practice and commentary tied to the Qu’ran.
The address, too, will serve as a permanent home for Lighthouse congregants who have been gathering in other members homes for its smaller events, said Lighthouse spokesman Sammy Aziz.
In an email, Aziz said the property was an office building that underwent a foreclosure. The nonprofit got a mixed-use permit from the town for the property: the first and third floors will remain office space to be leased, Aziz said.
The building also will undergo improvements, he said, that will add: an elevator; second-floor renovations for a Muslim community center; improved handicapped access; and restriping the parking lot with more handicapped spaces.
“We hope to be more involved in Bloomfield and contribute to the city on a social, economic, spiritual level,” Aziz said. “We are planning to host conferences and workshops, social events and religious discussions, to address people’s questions about Islam and to serve the public in various charitable works.”
