Letter To The Editor

TO THE EDITOR:

Paul Pirrotta, in his Oct. 18 guest column “State Needs To Develop Global Business Strategy,” misses the mark on the value of the Department of Economic and Community Development (DECD).

For the past five years, DECD has been the chief sponsor of the world’s largest international air shows, which alternate annually between London and Paris. DECD has made significant financial and staff commitments to these shows in order to meet the global needs of the state’s business community, showcase the capabilities of the state’s aerospace and defense supply chain and promote Connecticut abroad. In addition to providing substantial financing, DECD is an active partner with CCAT in the planning and matchmaking activities that occur at these shows.

As a result of our participation in this program, Flanagan Industries estimates that it has increased its European sales by $500,000 per year. We could not have achieved these results without Connecticut’s international air show program, and are extremely proud to be members of “Team Connecticut.” In addition, Flanagan Industries has also benefitted from low interest capital equipment loans from both DECD and CDA.

DECD’s active role in assisting Connecticut aerospace component manufactures in the international arena should NOT be understated.
