Legislature trims $365M budget deficit

The Connecticut General Assembly passed budget reduction measures late Wednesday to fill a $365 million deficit in the state budget.

The cuts mostly hit education and health care programs, including a $90 million cut to hospitals, but the measures landed on other business program as well, notably a reduction in film tax credits.

The House passed the measures 140-3 and the Senate passed them 31-3.

Wednesday’s action comes three weeks after Gov. Dannel Malloy trimmed $170 million from the current year budget to make up for the deficit, hitting the arts and tourism programs.

In addition to the shortfall this fiscal year, the state also faces a projected $2.1 billion deficit for the upcoming two-year budget starting July 1. The General Assembly must pass a new balanced budget in the legislative session starting Jan. 8. Both Malloy and House Speaker Brendan Sharkey are opposed to raising taxes, especially for businesses.
