Legislator to try again on holiday pay

Spurred by the ever-expanding hours of retailers on Thanksgiving, Rep. Matt Lesser, D-Middletown, said he plans to again introduce legislation that would require employers to pay their employees more to work on the holiday.

Lesser’s bill last year, which did not make it out of committee, would have required employers to pay 2.5-times the regular wage rate of employees scheduled to work on Thanksgiving or Christmas, or 1.5 times their regular rate, plus future time off.

The legislation called for a fine of $100 per violation and the possibility of back pay, as determined by the state’s labor commissioner.
