Leadership transition complete at United Way

Paula S. Gilberto has officially assumed the role of president and CEO of United Way of Central and Northeastern Connecticut following the retirement of Susan B. Dunn.

Gilberto, formerly the United Way’s senior vice president, helped United Way kick off its Working Families Initiative, raising awareness of challenges faced by lower-income families; chaired Hartford’s nationally-recognized Campaign for Grade-Level Reading; and led the development of Workforce Solutions Collaborative of Metro Hartford, a collaborative of regional organizations working to meet employer needs by developing an educated, economically self-sufficient workforce.

She was selected as one of Hartford Business Journal’s 5 to Watch for 2016. She said at the time, her primary focus will be on not just how much money her organization raises and how many people are served, but how well funds are spent.

Gilberto also said two broad program initiatives she will focus on are jobs and education. The latter includes ongoing efforts to have children reading at grade level by grade four.

In 2016, she was elected to serve on the first board of directors of the National Fund for Workforce Solutions, a national partnership of employers, workers, communities and philanthropy that strengthen local economies by implementing demand-driven strategies that create talent supply chains, advance workers into family-supporting careers, and improve workforce development systems.
