Leader named for CT health reform effort

Mark Schaefer, a clinical psychologist and director of medical policy for the State Department of Social Services, will take a new job to lead efforts to transform the way health care is delivered in Connecticut, Lt. Gov. Nancy Wyman announced.

As director of health care innovation, Schaefer will oversee the efforts of the State Innovation Model Initiative, a program within the Office of the Health Care Advocate that aims to lower the cost and improve the quality of care in the state by 2020.

State health officials will compete for up to $45 million in funding to test out parts of the plan, which range from changes in primary care practice to improved health care access and price transparency.
