LAZ Parking said Wednesday it will close its downtown Hartford Talcott Street garage indefinitely Aug. 1, while it works with the city on long-term renovation plans for the property.
According to LAZ, about 500 parkers daily use the 760-space garage.
Laz purchased Talcott Plaza in 2011 and said the parking garage is structurally safe but in need of major repairs. The garage sits on a key piece of real estate in downtown Hartford, next to where the New Britain Rock Cats plan to build their $60 million minor league stadium. It’s also where UConn considered building its new Hartford campus, before the school chose the site of the former Hartford Times building instead.
Laz said it plans to work with the city to develop plans for renovating the city block.
The company said it will accommodate Talcott garage parkers by finding them comparable parking opportunities at Laz or other parking facilities in downtown.
Laz’s staff will be on-site for the next 30 days to meet with parkers and provide them alternative options, such as free parking for the summer months at Laz’s nearby lot on Market Street.
