Lawmakers push for rail yard audit results

A group of Connecticut lawmakers is pushing for answers on when an audit will be completed to explain the rising costs of upgrading New Haven’s rail maintenance center.

Its price increased from $300 million in 2005 to an estimated $1.2 billion as of spring 2008.

The $630,000 audit was expected to be ready in September. A spokesman for Republican Gov. M. Jodi Rell says it is still in the works.

Several Democratic lawmakers say the General Assembly needs a better handle on the new figures, especially since Connecticut faces major budget deficits in coming years.

The maintenance yard will be used to service 300 new Metro-North Railroad cars, expected to arrive late next year. (AP)
