Lawmaker calling potential vo-tech school closings “short-sighted”

Gov. Dannel P. Malloy’s call for more spending reductions, which could include closing two vocational technical high schools, has prompted opposition from the House’s majority leader.

House Majority Leader Joe Aresimowicz (D-Berlin) is holding a press conference at noon with others in Hartford to voice concerns.

The state Board of Education has endorsed a plan to close two vocational schools and end athletic programs at others if it is required to cut 10 percent of its budget in the coming fiscal year, which budget chief Ben Barnes said is under review, according to media reports.

In a media advisory, Aresimowicz said he will be joined by other opponents of the closure plan he called “short-sighted and ill-advised.”
