Law firm Harris Beach Murtha launches AI industry team

A regional law firm with an office in Hartford has joined the growing list of legal advisers offering companies help with the challenges presented by artificial intelligence.

Harris Beach Murtha announced Tuesday it has launched an artificial intelligence industry team “to assist companies with navigating the legal, ethical, regulatory and business challenges” of AI.

Drawing on technical and legal expertise, the firm says its attorneys advise clients developing AI products, deploying customer-facing tools and using AI internally.

It adds that the team is intended to help companies seize opportunities, manage risk and stay ahead of emerging regulations in areas like data privacy, intellectual property, contracts, employment law, corporate governance, financing and litigation.

The 16-member team is led by attorney Brendan Palfreyman.

The announcement comes as law firms continue to add AI teams to meet clients’ growing demands for guidance on the rapidly growing and evolving technology.

According to an October 2024 report from Forbes, 72% of businesses have adopted AI for at least one business function, leading to a range of legal needs from companies and other organizations, from identifying and mitigating risks, to vetting third-party vendors.

Harris Beach Murtha was formed in the past year from the merger of the Hartford law firm Murtha Cullina and Rochester, New York-based Harris Beach.

The firm now has more than 250 attorneys, including 150 partners, working across 16 offices in Connecticut, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York and the District of Columbia.
