Lamont nominates new Department of Consumer Protection head

Gov. Ned Lamont announced Monday afternoon he’s nominating attorney Bryan Cafferelli to serve as commissioner of the state Department of Consumer Protection (DCP), taking over for outgoing head Michelle Seagull.

Cafferelli’s nomination will now go to the Connecticut General Assembly for consideration. If state officials confirm his nomination, Cafferelli will take over for Seagull, who announced in December she’d be leaving the post in the first quarter of 2023 to “pursue other professional opportunities.”

In his nomination, Lamont said Cafferelli’s experience as an attorney for the DCP and time working in state government make him a good candidate for the job. Since 2019, Cafferelli has served as legal counsel of the Connecticut Senate Republican Office, where he’s responsible for providing advice to senators and caucus staff with legal and legislative matters.

Lamont’s office said that prior to his current role, Cafferelli served as a drug control attorney for the DCP from April 2017 to January 2019.

Previously he also worked worked as special deputy assistant state’s attorney for the Office of the State’s Attorney in the Judicial District of Stamford and as chief of staff and legal counsel for former Lt. Governor Michael Fedele, according to information from Lamont’s office.
