Lake Compounce in Bristol has pushed back the debut of its new Venus Vortex ride until next year because of the coronavirus pandemic.
The six-story raft ride is designed to resemble the mouth of a hungry venus flytrap, and is located in the park’s Crocodile Cove water park.
It was expected to be a large draw for the amusement park once its water park opened on Memorial Day weekend. However, due to the virus’ impact, work has stopped on the ride, park officials announced on the park’s website Friday. The attraction will debut in 2021 instead.
“This beast of a water slide deserves the spotlight and a full season for its opening, and that is not possible this year,” park management said in announcing the decision.
For those who have season passes for 2020, the Bristol-based park’s management has also decided to extend these so they are valid for the entire 2021 season.
Previously, the passes were only going to be extended partly into the 2021 season, but this latest decision makes them valid for the full season next year.
“It’s the right thing to do in appreciation of your patience and support,” management said.
Due to the virus and Gov. Ned Lamont’s order for non-essential businesses to close, the park wasn’t able to open on May 2 as it originally planned. The opening date for the park, which dates back to 1846, remains to be determined.
“This year hasn’t gone like any of us expected,” the announcement said. “We know how challenging it has been to wait. We can’t wait until the day you’re back with us and the sounds of summer fill the air again.”
The park nevertheless continues to prepare for its 2020 opening, including hiring staff, though so far, it still doesn’t have an exact date to share with guests. Management is seeking guidance from and following the recommendations of local, state and federal officials.
“Our top priority, as always, is the health and safety of our guests and team members,” park management said.
