Kohl’s ramping up CT, US holiday hiring

Kohl’s Department Stores is hiring more than 67,000 holiday-season workers – about 1,000 of whom are being added in its 21 Connecticut stores.

The Menomonee Falls, Wis., chain said Wednesday it’s hiring an average 50 seasonal workers at its 1,163 stores in 49 states.

In addition, Kohl’s said it’s filling another 9,300 seasonal slots at its U.S. distribution centers.

Hiring began this month, the retailer said, and most jobs will be filled by mid-November. Holiday positions are also being filled at the company’s distribution centers, where hiring began in August.

Kohl’s seasonal-hiring intentions coincides with a survey from global outplacement consultant Challenger, Gray & Christmas Inc. that retailers’ seasonal hiring this year will top 2013, when 786,200 workers were added to retail payrolls during the final three months of that year.

United Parcel Service also has announced plans to add 95,000 seasonal workers this year, nearly doubling last year’s level, Challenger Gray said.

“The last two years saw holiday hiring return to pre-recession levels,’’ CEO John Challenger said Wednesday. “This year, we could see hiring return to levels not seen since the height of the dot.com boom. Holiday spending will undoubtedly benefit from the fact that payrolls are increasing by an average of 215,000 new workers per month, so far this year. That translates into more people with jobs, which means more holiday spending money.’’
