A children’s fitness franchise is seeking zoning approval to open at a Newington retail building where a swim school was approved last year, according to documents filed with the town’s Planning and Zoning Commission.
KidStrong, a kids gym chain, is seeking a special permit to occupy 3,600 square feet of the 21,697-square-foot building at 1581 Southeast Road, converting the space from retail to a recreational use.
The applicant is Philip H. Cerrone III, a Fairfield-based architect, filing on behalf of the property owner, 1599 SE Road LLC.
KidStrong, founded in 2015 in Kentucky, has more than 160 locations across the United States and Canada, including several in Connecticut.
The facility would operate Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 7:30 p.m., and Saturday from 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. It would be closed on Sundays, according to the application.
The building, which sits near the Farmington town line, is also home to Goldfish Swim School, a Michigan-based franchise that
received zoning approval in November 2025 to convert roughly 7,312 square feet of the space into its third Connecticut location. Goldfish has existing schools in Manchester and Cromwell.
A hearing for the KidStrong application has not yet been scheduled.
