Kaman’s rewing of A-10 warplanes delayed

Kaman Corp. says its start on building new wing surfaces and assemblies for the Air Force’s A-10 ground-attack warplanes will start later in the year and thus won’t contribute as much to 2011 revenue for the Bloomfield aerospace firm as first planned.

The work to be done in its Jacksonville, Fla., plant is expected to begin closer to the end of the year, Chief Financial Officer William Denninger announced in a statement Friday.

That means, Denninger said, Kaman’s original estimate of a $5 million to $6 million bump to revenue this year is unlikely. He declined comment on the specific impact to operating earnings, except to say the profit margin for the Warthog rewing will be “below that of our aerospace segment average.”

“We do expect,” he said, “that the shortfall will be largely offset by higher sales of bearings and other product lines.”
