Johnson wins 2020 Travelers Championship crown; tournament donates $1.6M to area charities

Dustin Johnson captured the 2020 Travelers Championship title on Sunday at a fanless TPC River Highlands in Cromwell.

Johnson, who earned his 21st PGA Tour title, shot 19 under par through 72 holes of golf and took home the tournament’s first-place prize of more than $1.3 million. He had a one-stroke victory over Kevin Streelman.

Other top finishers at the four-day tournament included Mackenzie Hughes, Will Gordon and Kevin Na. The full leaderboard can be found here.

The total purse for the tournament was set for $7.4 million.

Following a brief storm delay Sunday afternoon, Johnson tapped in for par on the 18th hole and raised his ball to applause from tournament officials, course workers and reporters, which were the only people allowed at the course due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

“… it was definitely strange playing with no fans, but you still can feel the pressure, you still can feel how important a golf tournament it is, and you’re coming down the stretch, to me it felt the same, whether it was a million fans or zero,” Johnson told reporters after Sunday’s victory, his first since Feb. 2019.

Late Sunday, property-casualty insurer Travelers Cos., which has a major presence in downtown Hartford, announced the tournament generated more than $1.6 million for over 100 charitable organizations. The tournament’s primary beneficiary is independent not-for-profit organization 4-CT, which officials say funds statewide COVID-19 relief efforts.

The company said it’s contributed more than $20 million for 750-plus charities nationwide since it became the tournament’s title sponsor in 2007.

A total of seven golfers withdrew from the event over potential coronavirus exposures. The PGA Tour says it’s making changes to its COVID-19 policies after a handful of golfers and caddies tested positive for the virus.

Travelers officials in a statement thanked sponsors and volunteers who supported the 2020 event that faced significant challenges created by the pandemic.

“Once again, our local community showed how important the Travelers Championship is to Connecticut,” said Andy Bessette, executive vice president and chief administrative officer at Travelers.

“We want everyone to know how much that support means, not only to us but to all the charities that benefit from the tournament’s platform,” Bessette said. “We’d like to thank the PGA TOUR and its players for helping make that happen.”
