Johnson Memorial to pay six-figure fine

A federal prosecutor says Johnson Memorial Hospital in Stafford has agreed to pay about $191,000 to settle allegations that it overbilled Medicare.

U.S. Attorney Nora Dannehy said in a statement Monday that the civil settlement agreement resolves allegations that the hospital violated the False Claims Act between 2000 and 2005.

Dannehy says Medicare at the time allowed payment for one unit of infusion therapy and chemotherapy administration per patient visit, and for one unit of blood transfusion service per day. She says the hospital on several occasions billed Medicare for multiple units of those services per visit or day.

The hospital isn’t admitting wrongdoing. A hospital spokeswoman had no immediate comment Monday. (AP)
