Our Mission: The Jewish Federation of Greater Hartford protects and enhances the wellbeing of Jews worldwide through the values of tikkun olam (repairing the world), tzedakah (charity and social justice) and Torah (Jewish learning).
Jewish Federation of Greater Hartford has been supporting Jewish life and transforming our Jewish future since 1945. From educating children to caring for seniors to strengthening Jewish communal security, Federation touches every aspect of Jewish life in Greater Hartford, in Israel and around the world. While Federation is best known for its annual fundraising campaign — which supports more than 20 Federation initiatives and 34 local and international partner agencies — it is also at the forefront of Jewish action and impact around the world. The Federation network is among the first to respond to war, acts of terrorism and natural disasters, providing humanitarian and educational support in the U.S., in Israel and across the globe. Locally, Federation supports literacy programs for at-risk elementary school children, helps parents send their children to Jewish camps and schools, and helps young adults make their first trip to Israel. We provide opportunities for social action and train the next generation of leaders and teachers who will shape tomorrow’s Jewish community. We invite you to get involved.
Giving and Learning Opportunities
Federation holds more than 40 events each year, both fundraising and educational. Most are open to the public, and many involve corporate sponsorship opportunities.
HINENI: Living Joyously in Uncertain Times: An Evening of Voices and Visions: This signature event on September 24, 2019, launched Federation’s 2020 Annual Campaign. It showcased the power of community partnerships to transcend challenging times. Pioneering sex therapist Dr. Ruth Westheimer shared the amazing story of how she survived Nazi Germany, helped to build the State of Israel and created a new life and illustrious career in the United States by forming friendships and alliances. Connecticut State Senator Saud Anwar and Reverend Gretchen N. Sausville, formerly Associate Pastor and Acting Head of Staff at Westminster Presbyterian Church in West Hartford, also shared their own stories of identity, community and partnership.
Greater Hartford Jewish Leadership Academy: The Academy provides individualized leadership development based on Jewish values to prepare our community to adapt and respond to an ever-changing environment. Managed by Federation with funding from the Jewish Community Foundation and other sources, it draws on local and national best practices and engages top experts in the field.
Volunteer Opportunities
Federation offers many ways to bring Jewish values to life. You can read to an at-risk student as a Children’s Reading Partners volunteer, help local women and girls meet basic needs through the Dignity Project, visit a homebound Jewish senior through Shabbat Shalom Greater Hartford, grow and harvest produce for the hungry at Jessie’s Community Gardens, and much more.
