Jepsen joins herbal supplements probe

State Attorney General George Jepsen said he has joined a small group of fellow AGs in other states that is probing the herbal supplements industry.

The probe builds on an investigation by New York’s AG, Eric T. Schneiderman, who last month sent cease-and-desist orders New York’s AG sent to four retailers — Walmart, GNC, Target and Walgreens — charging that they were selling supplements that did not contain ingredients advertised on the labels and contained other contaminants.

”In some cases, the supplements had been processed to such an extent that the genetic material of the original plant source was undetectable or not present at all,” Jepsen said.

The multi-state probe is led by New York and also includes Indiana and Puerto Rico. The AGs aim to seek greater transparency from supplement makers and retailers.
