Jax to increase science course offerings

The Jackson Laboratory for Genomic Medicine in Farmington said some of a $1.6 million grant will allow it to expand its courses in genetics and other topics for scientists, postdoc fellows and students.

The Farmington facility will share the grant from the Maryland-based Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI) with Jax headquarters in Maine.

“As the pace of discovery and technology development increases, so does the need for scientist education,” Jax Vice President for Education Thomas Litwin said in a statement. “With cutting-edge research, an internationally recognized faculty, and the new JAX Genomic Medicine campus, we are well positioned to creatively expand our advanced courses program to better serve the research community.”

One of the planned courses will train professors from smaller schools to work big data genomics into their undergraduate courses, Jax said, while others will focus on microbiomes and mouse genetics.

The biomedical nonprofit will also collaborate with other HHMI-funded facilities, including Marine Biological Laboratory in Woods Hole, Mass., and Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory in New York.
