It’s true, gov’t can’t create entrepreneurs

To the Editor,

Regarding your Feb. 24 editorial (Government Can’t Create Entrepreneurs), we are finally hearing a voice of sanity. Entrepreneurs start businesses because of an opportunity and a passion. If opportunities exist, smart entrepreneurs get the money to soon follow. At a state level there is nothing Connecticut can do about spurring passion; that’s an individual thing. The state can do something about opportunity. Follow the example of Greenville, S.C. With cooperation from the state of South Carolina, the Greenville area attracted in the mid-90’s the first BMW plant in the U.S. That plant spurred opportunity for hundreds of entrepreneurs and new businesses. What followed was a growth in the South Carolina Upstate area that has catapulted the region to one of the most desirable places to live in the country. So instead of throwing money at one-off entrepreneurial ventures where one out of 100 might grow into a major employer, change the business environment as the editorial suggests. Attract the major employers. The opportunities and entrepreneurs will follow.
