ISO: Natural gas use may impact winter power

Electric grid administrator ISO New England said the region’s reliance on natural gas for home heating and power generation could present some operational challenges this winter.

ISO said the region should have sufficient resources to meet demand for electricity during the upcoming winter, but that is dependent on the supply of natural gas.

More than 13,000 megawatts, or 45 percent, of New England power generating capacity comes from natural gas. The demand for natural gas also increases as temperatures drop, and businesses and homes use it for heating fuel.

If the natural gas supplies tighten this winter, ISO predicts the region will have to become more dependent on coal and oil to meet power demand.
