Because they failed to provide the proper paperwork, the Internal Revenue Service has revoked the tax exempt status of more than 2,100 Connecticut charities.
Organizations such as the Roberto Clemente League of Hartford, Police Officers Wives Association of Enfield and Mohegan Rod and Gun Club of Monroe all lost their tax exempt status within the past year because they failed to provide their annual informational return with the IRS for three consecutive years.
Of the 2,100 charities decertified, 82 percent were small public charities with budgets of $25,000 or less, according to a February analysis by the National Council of Nonprofits.
The list of 2,100 revoked charities include those associated with unions (American Federation of Teachers, American Federal of State County & Municipal Employees) sports (Pop Warner Little Scholars Inc., Enfield Archery Club Inc.) fraternities and sororities (Pi Tau Sigma, Alpha Epsilon Delta) and animals (Jack Russell Terrier Association, Fish of Bristol, Inc.)
The Connecticut Department of Consumer Protection warned would-be charitable donors to make sure any organization they give money to still has tax-exempt status. The department keeps a list of such organizations on its Web site.
