International Assoc. of Black Professional Fire Fighters holds convention in Hartford

The International Association of Black Professional Fire Fighters annual convention is this week in Hartford.

The Hartford Marriott Downtown is hosting the convention, which features workshops, meetings, social events and other activities.

The group is welcoming professional firefighters from across the United States as well as London and the Caribbean.

“It has been 52 years since the IABPFF convention was last held in Hartford, and we are looking forward to seeing each other here,” said Gary Tinney, a retired New Haven fire captain who is vice president of the IABPFF.

Events this week include a memorial march of 300 firefighters starting at 8:30 a.m. Wednesday from the Hartford Marriott Downtown to Faith Congregation Church on Main Street, followed by a memorial service. 

On Friday, IABPFF members will host a community service event at the Wilson-Gray YMCA and distribute bags of school supplies to Hartford students. At 8 p.m., a Golden Anniversary Celebration will take place at the Marriott with remarks by Gov. Ned Lamont, U.S. Rep. John Larson, D-1st District, and New York Attorney General Letitia James.
