Insurers Unitrin, Aetna laying off in CT

A Chicago property and casualty insurer is closing its Meriden regional office and laying off 70 Connecticut employees, a regulatory filing shows.

Meanwhile, Hartford health insurer Aetna Inc. says it will idle 250 workers nationwide including 35 in Connecticut as it combats declining commercial enrollment.

Unitrin Direct, which provides property and causality insurance in 25 states including Connecticut, told the state Labor Department that it will permanently close its office at 500 South Broad St., and begin laying off workers April 4.

All 70 workers in that office will be lose their job by June.

Unitrin did not immediately return an email seeking comment.
