Middletown manufacturer Omega Flex Inc. has successfully fended off a lawsuit from Nationwide Mutual Fire Insurance that targeted its fuel gas piping systems.
Nationwide sued the company following a 2009 house fire in Trumbull, alleging that Omega’s TracFlex stainless steel piping was defective because it could not withstand lightning damage.
A federal jury in U.S. District Court of Connecticut found that Nationwide had not proven its claim.
Omega Flex said in a statement that it was able to show that the piping had been improperly installed — without a required electrical bonding wire.
It was the second time this year a jury has rejected an insurer’s attempt to seek reimbursement from Omega for lightning claims paid out to policyholders, the company said.
