Officials with the Connecticut Insurance Department said they recovered $1.6 million from insurers in the first three months of 2014.
Of that amount, just over $1 million came from fines against insurance carriers for violations like untimely claim payments and improper licensing. That money will go to the state’s general fund and to consumer outreach and education efforts, the department said.
The department’s intervention on behalf of aggrieved policy holders was the source of the remaining $510,000. The department received more than 1,700 complaints and inquiries from insurance customers during the quarter.
Accident and health policies represented $324,000 of the total amount of recouped.
