ING again to sponsor Hartford Marathon

ING has signed on for a fifth year as the title sponsor of the 2012 ING Hartford Marathon.

In making the announcement, the Hartford Marathon Foundation credited ING with helping distinguish the marathon as a major race event in New England, bringing more than 12,000 runners and 30,000 spectators to Hartford each October. The 2011 event will take place on Saturday, Oct. 15, in Bushnell Park.

The foundation said it shares with ING similar goals in organizing eco-friendly race events that promote health, fitness and enjoyment for all participants. Since the partnership was established in 2008, the marathon has been recognized nationally, earning gold certification by the national Council for Responsible Sport and qualifying as a state championship race designation from the Road Runners Club of America.

“Working with ING as title sponsor has allowed us to add new race programs to our events, catapulting us to become a signature race event in New England,” said Beth Shluger, executive director of the Hartford Marathon Foundation. “We are delighted to be in the ranks with the ING New York City Marathon and ING Miami Marathon and Half Marathon and we hope the partnership continues for many more years to come.”

CCR gives back

Employees of CCR LLP, a regional certified public accounting and business advisory firm with an office in Glastonbury, took part in the firm’s fourth annual Community Day of Caring. Projects included performing maintenance work at Mystic Seaport Aquarium. Employees did pruning, weeding, trimming and trash removal in order to keep the museum’s appearance clean for visitors.

“Community Day of Caring is a result of our year-round commitment to give back to the communities where we live and work,” said David A. Platt, managing partner of CCR. “I believe that volunteering is an important professional responsibility. It offers a fresh perspective of what is really important and helps redefine the meaning of success. Employees find it rewarding to provide assistance and direction to others in need.”

Scholarships

As the school year winds down, many area organizations are presenting scholarships. Here are a few:

• Forty-one high school seniors from across Connecticut have been awarded a Cumberland Farms Believe and Achieve Scholarship. Each winner will receive $1,000 toward college expenses from the convenience store retailer. This is the fifth consecutive year that Cumberland Farms awarded the scholarships to promising students across its service area. As part of the company’s corporate giving initiative, the Believe and Achieve Scholarship is open to students entering college and who live within 30 miles of any Cumberland Farms outlet. While the initiative takes academic performance into account, the award also considers the student’s financial need.

• The South Windsor Chamber of Commerce has presented $1,000 scholarships to two students embarking on business studies at college. Katherine Desy will be attending Syracuse University in the fall as a business major focusing on marketing and entrepreneurship. William Moran will be attending a university in Pennsylvania in the fall for business. South Windsor Dollars for Scholars administers the Chamber scholarships.

• The Jewish Community Foundation of Greater Hartford has named Samuel J. Cohen as a recipient of the Alvin Kennedy and Barbara Kessel Scholarships. The Farmington High School graduate will attend Rochester Institute of Technology in the fall, where he plans on majoring in biochemical engineering. Ultimately Sam wants to use his knowledge of prosthetics and love of building to help individuals live independently.

• Simsbury Bank has presented its annual scholarship to Shelby Gibson of Granby Memorial High School. She plans to attend Eastern Connecticut State University to pursue studies in the field of finance.
