Indian tech firm coming to Hartford to absorb IT for Stanley Black & Decker

Indian tech company HCL Technologies will open a Global Delivery Center in Hartford to offer “digital transformation services” to smart manufacturing, insurance, aerospace, and defense industry companies, the largest of which will be Stanley Black & Decker, the Hartford Business Journal has learned.

As part of an agreement Stanley signed with the company, HCL will deploy 1,000 people globally, including in Hartford, to support Stanley’s IT operations, HCL said. HCL will work with Stanley to run the servers and systems and other technology infrastructure the company uses.

Stanley will still maintain an in-house IT department, though some of the New Britain-based toolmaker’s employees will move to HCL, said Stanley spokeswoman Shannon Lapierre.

There will also be “a small number” of layoffs at Stanley Black & Decker as a result of the new agreement, Lapierre said. Financial terms of the deal weren’t disclosed and HCL didn’t say where it will base its Hartford operations.

The company hasn’t decided on a Hartford office yet, but is looking for about 23,000 square feet of space downtown, realty sources said.

Stanley has made Hartford an increasing focus point in recent years opening a research center downtown at Constitution Plaza last year and supporting the Stanley+TechStars Additive Manufacturing Accelerator program, which mentors additive-manufacturing startups from around the globe.

Stanley is also working with developer Carlos Mouta to potentially open an advanced manufacturing hub in the city’s Parkville section.

“With the [Global Delivery Center], HCL will invest in the area and create local jobs with the help of a strong ecosystem regionally and at the state level,” HCL said.

In a statement, Stanley Chief Financial Officer Don Allan said partnering with HCL represents a continued drive toward innovation at the New Britain-based manufacturer.

“Partnering with HCL is an important component of our strategy to digitally transform our organization and drive resiliency and efficiency across the business,” Allan said. “We are also pleased that they will be locating a global delivery center in Hartford, which will continue to add to the city’s presence as a significant digital and technology innovation hub.”

HCL said it offers services and products through three business units — IT and business, engineering and R&D, and products and platforms.
